Flourishing Things: Gratitude Practice

While our lives aren’t always perfect, it is important to acknowledge the things we are grateful for whether they are big or small. Simply taking time to notice and reflect on the things in your life has the ability to change your life for the better. In expressing gratitude, you will be able to change your perspective by focusing on the things that bring you happiness, peace and comfort. Practicing gratitude will allow you to experience more positive emotions and celebrate life more effectively!

One of the best ways to practice gratitude is to write down the things you are grateful for. Gratitude journals are a great place to reflect on moments, activities, people, and things for which you are grateful. One of the best things about gratitude journals is that there are no rules when it comes to expressing your gratitude! Entries can be as long or as short as you would like and can be about anything, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. In fact, being as specific as possible is encouraged when writing in your gratitude journal. While it is easy to be grateful for big picture things like having a roof over your head, becoming aware of the small things that increase your quality of life will enhance your gratitude practice. Similar to a gratitude journal, writing a letter to someone is a great way to express why you are grateful for them and how they have positively impacted your life. This act not only benefits you but the recipient of your letter as well!

If journaling isn’t for you, there are plenty of other ways to practice gratitude. Try voicing your gratitude out loud to friends and family members so that they too can begin appreciating the small things. Creating a gratitude jar is another great way to document your gratitude and remind yourself of what is truly important. Making an effort to smile and say thank you more often is yet another easy way of expressing gratitude. Making these simple changes is a great way to brighten up your life as well as the lives of people around you!
